Become a COMO Kid!

COMO Kids Before and After School Program

COMO Kids is a before and after school enrichment program at the COMO for students in elementary school. COMO Kids is a curriculum-based, state-licensed childcare program that focuses on providing engaging, age-appropriate activities under the supervision of caring, qualified staff.

Students enjoy access to the entire COMO campus, where opportunities for educational, creative and recreational pursuits abound! Students will:

  • Flex their creative muscles in the COMO pottery studio

  • Problem-solve using emerging technology in the COMO MakerSpace

  • Explore the natural world in the Children’s Garden and Outdoor Classroom

  • Enjoy gym games

  • Be active on the COMO tennis and paddle tennis courts

  • Express themselves on the COMO stage

  • Create incredible memories with their peers and teachers

  • Foster new friendships

Start your morning right! Drop off your child at the COMO as early as 7 a.m. and they will start their day with our caring and qualified staff. Students will then be picked up and bussed to their schools to begin their school day.

In the afternoon, students take the bus from their school to the COMO. Aftercare runs until 6 p.m.Activities include: a Homework Zone curriculum, with the goal of providing a quiet space and homework help when needed; sessions in the Pottery Studio and MakerSpace; athletics lessons with the COMO’s Athletic Director; outdoor exploration on the playground, in the garden, or in the outdoor classroom; and special seasonal projects and crafts! Children also have the opportunity to participate in a series called Art Explorations & Scientific Studies- carefully crafted lessons that ultimately are designed to enhance and expand upon their understanding of science and the arts

Art Explorations & Science Studies Series

Art Explorations

Art Exploration offers a supportive and non-competitive learning environment where children use a variety of media to engage in open-ended art exploration and self-expression. Each week students will learn about a new artist or a children’s book illustrator and will use it as an inspiration for creating their own unique works of art. The open-ended format of our classes ensures that all students experience success and grow in their confidence and abilities as young artists. Sessions will end with the children curating their own art show for families and guests.

Scientific Studies

Our after school science enrichment program offers an interactive and fun-filled learning environment designed to spark students’ imagination, creativity and to deepen their understanding of science topics studied in school. Each month students will engage in the investigation of one science topic (chosen from one of the three main branches of Science– Physical, Life and Earth Sciences), designing and conducting experiments, observing and making connections, solving problems and working as a team. Our mixed-age classes are carefully planned to allow meaningful and active participation for all participants. Our goal is not only to support students academically, but to create excitement around science and to build students’ confidence and self-esteem!

Testimonial

"My two children, now a Stonington High School freshman and a seventh grader at Mystic Middle School, have been enrolled in programs at the COMO beginning with Kinderfun and Summer Camp, through before and after care at both the COMO and Deans Mill School, onto IMPACT in middle school, and both will be part of the Junior Leadership Program this summer. The COMO staff is the one thing that keeps us coming back to the COMO year after year. On some days, my kids have spent more time with their COMO teachers than with me, and it’s crucial for me to know that my children are with qualified individuals that foster a safe environment while still managing to make it fun! There have been times my kids have complained when I pick them up because they are having such a good time and don’t want to leave! The COMO is not your average daycare – they seek out and hire talented, caring people. As a working parent, I don’t know what I would have done without the COMO over the past ten years. Thank you!" -Merilee Paoloni, March 2016
