Meet the Instructors

Instructor Amanda Oakes earned a Bachelor of Science Degree in Art Education from Skidmore College. Her concentration was in ceramics and for her senior show, she created a mural painting out of clay! Oakes enjoys the technique of hand building and the inspiration she gets from working with children. She previously taught at many places including Pine Point and St. Michael's School. Oakes has been teaching at the COMO for 18 years.

Rebecca Hnatiuk is a ceramic artist from South Eastern Connecticut and is the COMO pottery studio manager. She believes that functional and sculptural work is inspired by exploration, experimentation and the tactile natural world. As a pottery educator at the COMO, Hnatiuk is dedicated to teaching adults and kids the art of wheel throwing, handbuilding, a variety of exciting surface treatments and more. Hnatiuk graduated Alfred University with a concentration in ceramics, focusing on glaze chemistry.

Family Clay Play

Come explore and have fun with clay in this preschool and parent class!  Alongside their instructor and parents, students will learn basic hand building techniques and paint with non-toxic glaze to add a pop of color to their creations at the end.  Clay is a tactile medium that teaches us about structure, shape and form while allowing expression through creativity.  A great learning experience for kids and adults alike! Taught by Rebecca Hnatiuk.
