Meet the Instructors

Victoria Schmidlapp, a ceramic artist from Old Lyme, Connecticut, is the COMO pottery studio manager. Schmidlapp has more than 17-years of ceramics experience. Allowing the clay to tell its story, her works have a fresh sophistication and modern aesthetic which exhibit a textural fluidity with notes from nature and societal surroundings. Schmidlapp received her B.F.A in ceramics from the Maryland Institute College of Art (MICA). During her time there, she was appointed teaching assistant for Adelaide Paul, and grew to love teaching ceramics. Shortly after graduation she continued to make pieces as a studio potter and showed at the 92Y Tribeca in New York City. After moving from Long Island four years ago she became a full-time studio potter working and teaching at a small studio in Old Lyme, before coming to the COMO.

Instructor Amanda Oakes earned a Bachelor of Science Degree in Art Education from Skidmore College. Her concentration was in ceramics and for her senior show, she created a mural painting out of clay! Oakes enjoys the technique of hand building and the inspiration she gets from working with children. She previously taught at many places including Pine Point and St. Michael's School. Oakes has been teaching at the COMO for 18 years.

Slip Slidin' Workshop

Ages 16+

Explore the relationship between texture and color in this one day, two part workshop. Using layered clay slip techniques you will create a unique work of art! The morning session will consist of students creating a slab rolled plate, bowl or set of coasters. In the afternoon session, students will investigate decoration, drawing, imagery, and narrative. Through discussion, demonstration, and collaboration, we hope to awaken new possibilities in all of our work! The only prerequisite is a willingness to have fun and embrace the deliberate awkwardness of finding oneself in unknown territory. Work will be fired and clear glazed by the instructor and available for pick up two weeks later.

Taught by Victoria Schmidlapp. Should the COMO need to cancel a class, a makeup date will be observed. Makeup dates will not be observed in the case of a participant's inability to attend class.
