Our nationally-ranked COMO Racquet professionals offer clinics and lessons for youth and adults on the COMO paddle tennis courts and COMO tennis courts. Jerry Albrikes

Jerry was born and raised in Connecticut. Jerry was a two time state champion playing for St. Joseph's in Trumbull, CT. He then went on to play at Division I Central Connecticut State University where he played #1 in singles and doubles. In his senior year he was named Athlete of the Year. Jerry also achieved the #1 ranking in New England in three divisions (Men's Singles, Doubles and Mixed Doubles). While teaching and coaching full time for the past 25 years he has worked with multiple world, national and college ranked players. Jerry worked under the tutelage of world renowned coach Nick Bollettieri where he was able to help train former #1 in the world ranked players Maria Sharapova and Jelena Jankovic. Jerry and his staff raised the level of tennis in this area by leading a tennis revival from the years 2000-2010 at Mystic Indoor Tennis. From 2010-2017 Jerry and his family moved to Charleston, SC to start a new tennis training facility called LTP where he had over 20 nationally ranked juniors. Some of Jerry’s prized awards are: Mixed Doubles National Champion, 2010 National Platform Tennis Champion and in 2017 he was inducted into the New England Tennis Hall of Fame in Newport, Rhode Island. Jerry is excited for this opportunity to raise the energy and level of platform tennis and join forces with the Stonington Community Center.

Nick Raho 

Nick Raho is a USPTA certified elite professional and joins the Stonington COMO team after spending the last year as the Head Pro at Mystic Indoor Sports (Mystic, CT). Prior to his time at MIS, Nick taught as Head Pro at Pond View Racquet Club (Westerly, RI) for six years. Between 2012 and 2014, Nick split his time teaching at both Pond View and Weekapaug Tennis Clubs in Westerly, RI. Nick played varsity Men's Tennis and Squash at Hobart and William Smith Colleges, before transferring and eventually graduating from Bryant University. He continued his tennis and squash career at Bryant, captaining the Men's Tennis team his senior year. In 2013, Nick began playing platform tennis. His passion and love of the sport have only grown over time as Nick continues to play in tournaments nationwide. Nick and his playing partner finished the 2017-2018 season ranked #53 in the country. Nick brings a tremendous amount of enthusiasm to the court and has a wealth of experience teaching players of all levels and all ages. As a true fan himself, Nick prides himself on being able to share his love for both tennis and platform tennis, each in their own unique way.

All clinics will be taught by 2010 National Platform tennis champion and 2017 New England Tennis Hall of Famer Jerry Albrikes or Nick Raho current top 50 player in the Nation.

Monday 9-10:30 am Beginner Paddle- With a backgound in tennis, this is the class for you! This class is for the tennis player that is looking to try an outdoor sport for the winter. You will learn how to play paddle and the differences between tennis and paddle. This class will show you how to use your tennis skills and translate them to the paddle courts and screens.

This class will teach you paddle tennis from the basic foundation. We will cover grips, positioning, strokes, screens and play. This 4 week class will get you into the sport as well as helping you set up matches so you can practice what we are working on in our clinics.

Build Your Own Clinic- If the times listed above don't work for you or you only want to play with 3 of your friends, you can create your own clinic! This class will be geared to what you want to work on. Specific to playing with a partner or playing against styles of play, or you just want to grow in the game of paddle with a group of friends.

Steve & Trish Griggs

Steve Griggs was the head coach of men's tennis and soccer at Yale before moving to the platform tennis rich environment of New Jersey in 1997. Both he and his wife Trish picked up the game quickly and soon found themselves on teams in the top division of NJ paddle. For the past 15 years they have been playing in local as well as national tournaments sponsored by the APTA (American Platform Tennis Association). Steve has won two national age group titles. Both Steve and Trish are certified instructors of the PPTA (Professional Platform Tennis Association). Steve was the teaching pro at the Noe Pond Club in Chatham, NJ. Now they have returned to CT and live in Guilford where they are the teaching pros at Guilford Racquet Club. They will split their time between Stonington and Guilford as they bring the excitement of paddle to our community.

Ability Levels:

Beginner: Designed for those looking to be introduced to this fun sport.

Advanced Beginner: designed for those who have had an introduction to paddle tennis and are ready for extended play, but not quite ready for intermediate instruction.

Intermediate: Designed for those who have a basic understanding of fundamentals, rules and how to play points.

Advanced:Designed for those who play on a regular basis with a basic understanding of how to play off the screens

Six-Week Paddle Tennis Spring Clinic (Adults 18+)

Our highly experienced and national champion Platform Tennis Professionals, Steve & Trish Griggs will teach the basic fundamentals and strategies of this exciting winter sport. Clinics will include instruction of the basic shots, as well as proper in-game positioning. Each session will conclude with games so that players can practice their skills while playing points.

Tuesdays: March 12-April 16
Wednesdays: March 13-April 17

Adult Beginner: Tuesdays 11:30 a.m.-12:30 p.m. or Wednesdays 4-5 p.m.

Advanced Beginner: Tuesdays 12:30-2 p.m.

Intermediate: Tuesdays 10-11:30 a.m. or Wednesdays 5-6:30 p.m.
