Introduction to Pottery

Try your hand at pottery for the first time, or get back into the fundamentals with Intro to Pottery! This course will cover basic hand-building methods, an introduction to glazing with a class or two spent on the potter’s wheel. Learn some essentials – how to form pinch pots, coil pots, work with slab pieces – and fall in love with ceramics!

Introduction II Special Topics:

Perfect for students who have taken Intro to Pottery, and want to further explore the world of ceramic design and graphics, Special Topics delves into unique building and decorative methods. Based on student interest, methods covered could include “broomstick” handbuilding, surface slip applications, mocha diffusion and more! All are welcome to this class, but please note that this course has been designed for students with some clay experience.

Intermediate Pottery

A great fit for those who wish to develop more advanced clay techniques and increase their knowledge of ceramics as an art form. This course is designed for past students – COMO’s Introduction to Pottery class is a prerequisite required to register for the intermediate class.  Individuals can sign up for the full eight weeks or can sign up for specific dates.  This is ideal for those who want to make a single project or have questions/concerns about specific topics that arise during their own clay practice.

Dates & Times: Wednesdays, March 15- May 3 | 10:00 am- 12:00 pm

Intermediate Sculpture

New course! Students will learn how to manipulate clay in different ways different from traditional functional ware. The first couple classes will be introducing various methods of sculpting from realism to abstract.  Students will then plan a bigger project to complete over the next few weeks.  A final crit will end the session where students can share their learning process. Clay experience is not required, but is a plus.

Bench Time

For $10/hour you will be able to work in the studio, at your own pace, continuing projects from class and sharpening your pottery techniques! Bench time can be purchased at the COMO main office, online, or in the studio during the scheduled times below:

Tuesday: 5:30 - 8:30pm

Wednesday: noon - 2pm/5:30 - 8:30 pm

Thursday: 5:30 - 8:30pm

Saturday: 10am - 3pm

 

 

Spring Pottery Socials

Sip & Spin

Come join us for a fun night out at the COMO Pottery Studio! Bring your favorite wine or brew and sip through a professional wheel throwing demo. Small snacks will also be provided.  Then be instructed how to throw your own creation on the pottery wheel.  Clay and firing for one piece is included, additional $2.00 per piece after.  Creations will be fired and glazed by instructor and can be picked up two weeks later.

Family Clay Play

Clay play is not just for kids, it can be for adults too!  Child and parent two week class, the first week is construction, from a bowl to a dino to flowers and everything in between. The following week will be glazing, adding color to make the creations pop.   Materials and clay included. Work will be available for pickup two weeks later.

Screen Printing on Clay

18+ 

Experience two mediums colliding in this collaborative workshop! Week one we will dive into creating a 2d digital design in our computer lab. Instructors will transfer designs to screens in preparation for printing. Week two you will create your "ceramic canvas" and screen print your design using colored slips. Pieces will be fired and clear glazed by instructors. Students will come back in week three for a discussion of process and finished work. No previous clay experience necessary.

Scratching the Surface

18+

Explore the relationship between texture and color in this one day, two part workshop. Using layered clay slips and reduction techniques you will create a unique piece for your collection! The morning session will consist of students constructing a plate, bowl, or set of coasters as well as applying colored slips. In the afternoon session, when the clay has firmed up, the magic begins with the multicolor reveal! Work will be fired and glazed by the instructor and available for pick up two weeks later. No previous clay experience needed.
