Video Production

Ages 9-13

Our popular Video production class is designed to introduce participants to the basics of video production. They will produce short videos for a web platform and over the course of the week, students will learn about studio production, editing and filming techniques. All participants will receive a DVD of their finished production. A basic knowledge of the Windows operating system is required.

Digital Photography Explorers

Ages 9-13

Learn how to capture the perfect shot while mastering the high-end features of digital cameras. Explore fundamentals such as light, shadow, exposure, and composition. Explore local areas in and around Stonington while on our Photo shoots. Discover the power of Photoshop® as you learn how to consistently produce quality images and fix most image issue. Do you already own a digital camera? Bring it to class for more customized instruction. Don’t have a camera? No problem, the COMO has DSLRs for you to use! All students will leave with a professional portfolio of their work.

The COMO’s Siege Workshop

Ages 9-13

Our Siege workshop class is a STEM (science, technology, engineering and math) centered program that focuses on the design and production of siege tools. Working within teams (and under the guidance of our instructor), students will learn the physics behind siege tools like trebuchets, catapults and ballistas. Last year we built model ballistas and designed the full scale version used at the COMO’s Pumpkin Chunkin. This summer we will be working to design a large catapult!

 All Participants will take home a scale model of the siege machine they create!

Make your own Video Game Demo!

Ages 9-13

Have you ever had a really cool idea for a video game, but didn’t know where to start?! The COMO has the answer for you!  Learn the basics of computer game design, including models, textures, volumes, lighting and more to make an amazing 2D video game. In this camp, you will build one fully designed level that will act as a demo for your game. All students will be able to export their finished demos to play at home on their phones, tablets or computers.

Summer Minecraft Adventures!

Ages 6-10

Explore the world of Minecraft through the lens of art, physics and architecture. Learn composition skills, color balance, and 3D modeling design  - all while you are immersed in the digital landscape of your creation!

Family Clay Play

Come explore and have fun with clay in this preschool and parent class!  Alongside their instructor and parents, students will learn basic hand building techniques and paint with non-toxic glaze to add a pop of color to their creations at the end.  Clay is a tactile medium that teaches us about structure, shape and form while allowing expression through creativity.  A great learning experience for kids and adults alike!

Pre-Teen Wheel Pottery

Ages 9-12

Learn the essentials of throwing on the potter’s wheel, from centering to pulling to trimming.  Work will be glazed as the end of the session.  No previous experience needed, but be prepared to have fun and get messy! Short nails and long hair pulled back required.

Teen/Young Adult Wheel Pottery Workshop

Introduction to 3D Printing

Ages 9-15

This hands-on workshop introduces students to the exciting world of 3-D printing. This course will demystify the terminology, software, and materials commonly available.  Learn how 3D printers work, the basics of safety, operation and maintenance as well as how to create your own 3D models and prepare files for printing.

Dungeons and Dragons Adventure Camp

 

Ages 7-12 | Part illustration and creative writing camp, part mystical journey through imagination, Dungeons & Dragons Adventure camp combines the classic roleplaying game with modern technology and creative learning opportunities! Develop a character, give him/her/it a back story and then start a quest with your fellow adventures. Participants will draw some of their amazing accomplishments and write of their heroism, to create a tome of their adventures can take home!

Needlepoint and Crochet Bracelets:

Ages 16 +

Love needlepoint but tired of making pillows?! Crafters will learn basic design and finishing techniques while creating a lovely, unique bracelet with their own designs!

Instructor Ann Miller is an artist and a professional educator, specializing in fiber sculpture and jewelry that resurrect traditional handcraft methods such as  sewing, knitting, weaving, needlepoint and embroidery. With a BS in Mathematics, a Master’s in education, and significant coursework in fine art and art history, Ann has a unique range of skills that she loves to share with others.

Summer Sculpture Camp

Ages 7-12

Make a box, make a ball, make it short, or make it tall! Sculpt animals, flowers, faces and more. With hands in a variety of media including; clay, sculpey, paper mache, cardboard, and more students can create anything they imagine! 

Instructor Amanda Oakes earned a Bachelor of Science Degree in Art Education from Skidmore College. Her concentration was in ceramics and for her senior show, she created a mural painting out of clay! Amanda enjoys the technique of hand building and the inspiration she gets from working with children. She previously taught at many places including Pine Point and St. Michael School. Amanda has been teaching at the COMO for 18 years

Doodling!

Ages 8-12

Participants will examine different doodling techniques, including zentangle, tangling, and Michael Trent StenDoodling to create a sketchbook full of wonderful doodle ideas and full page works of art.
