Our History

The first meeting of the Stonington Community Center took place on July 16, 1945, leading to its opening in the Ambulances Corps Hall on April 1, 1946.

Around this same time, the Center’s Thrift Shop was established by Mrs. A. H. Gildersleeve, who determined the British War Relief efforts should now be directed locally, specifically to benefit the COMO.

The name “COMO” derives from a nickname given by children and teenagers that frequented the building in its early years. The first official reference to it appears in a newspaper article from 1950 that highlights a baseball game between the Stonington COMO’s and The Old Mystic Baseball Club.

The story of the Stonington Community Center (COMO) is one of continuous growth, expanding programs, and diverse community engagement. Since adding tennis courts and purchasing Owen’s Field in the 1950s, the COMO has evolved to meet the needs of its growing audience. A new building opened in 1969 to house the Doris Muller Preschool, gymnasium, auditorium, and classrooms. Further development followed, including the addition of the Thrift Shop and Annex in 1974.

In response to community interest, the COMO reintroduced paddle tennis in 2013 with the construction of two new courts, a viewing deck, and a warming hut. The COMO also partnered with the Stonington Garden Club to create the Children’s Learning Garden in 2007 and restore the pond in 2015, which is now used for youth science activities. Through these initiatives, the COMO continues to provide meaningful opportunities for learning, recreation, and connection.

Today, the COMO is a vibrant hub that offers a diverse range of programs, events, and activities for all ages. From youth athletics and after-school enrichment to racquet sports, creative workshops, and community-wide events, the COMO provides opportunities for intellectual growth, active play, and creative expression.

Our facilities include tennis and paddle courts, a pottery studio, athletic fields, as well as access to local landmarks like duBois Beach. Through its programs and services, the COMO continues to foster a welcoming, engaged, and connected community, positively impacting the lives of thousands each year.
