Since 1997, the Stonington Garden Club has partnered with the Stonington Community Center to create and maintain the Children’s Learning Garden for COMO Kids, preschoolers and the local community to enjoy. Often referred to as the most magical place on the COMO campus, the garden showcases raised beds filled with seasonal flowers, veggies and fruits, shaded pavilion, compost station, and more.

The Children’s Learning Garden plays a huge role in enhancing the experiences of all the children enrolled in our licensed programming including camp, preschool and before and after school care. The garden is woven into the curriculum year-round, exposing youth to the exciting science behind gardening and building an awareness of the work that goes into growing the food we eat.

Annually, preschoolers participate in “Planting Day”, where members of the Stonington Garden Club work with our preschoolers to plant fresh veggies. After watching them grow, our preschoolers, COMO Kids and summer campers get to harvest the vegetables and cook them in the COMO kitchen – turning them into delicious treats like homemade salsa!

In 2017, The Stonington Garden Club raised $34,000 to completely renovated the garden. They added 10 raised beds, a strawberry and blueberry enclosure, perennial beds, and a new garden shed was installed.
