stars over stonington gala

Save the date and join the COMO on June 1, 2019 at the Stonington Harbor Yacht Club for the gala event, Stars over Stonington: Counting Stars! This year, we honor those who have brought our community together and inspired the love and appreciation of music both locally and on a national level. We are proud to recognize Greg Piccolo and the Kids Love Opera! program of Salt Marsh Opera for their contributions and inspiration in the fields of music.

Stars over Stonington is an evening of celebration, community and support. Join us at this year’s event for cocktails, live auction, dinner, live music and dancing as we celebrate community and raise critical funds to support the many educational, creative and recreational programs the COMO offers year-round for youth and adults! Don’t forget to purchase your golden ticket star pendant by Simply Majestic for your chance to win a truly stunning prize!

2019 Stars Honorees

Greg Piccolo

Many will recognize Greg Piccolo for his musical career including playing with The Variations, Greg and the Groupe, Greg Piccolo and Heavy Juice or his 24-year stint with Rhode Island's internationally renowned jump blues band Roomful of Blues. Piccolo was born in Westerly and began pursuing music at the young age of 13. He and his band were known for playing the high school dances as well as at the COMO, and Piccolo has had strong ties to the area since then. He has played with artists such as Colin James, Jimmie Vaughan, Carl Querfurth, Sugar Ray Norcia, Rich Lataille, Doug James, Al Copley, and Jon Batiste, and still plays in the area.

“The COMO certainly has a spot in my heart. It’s always there and I’ll always remember it. … I hope that young people feel the same way as I did when I was young doing what I loved to do.” - Greg Piccolo

Kids Love Opera! program of Salt Marsh Opera

Kids Love Opera!, a youth education program, visits area classrooms each April. Since 2012, Kids Love Opera! has helped elementary and middle school aged students discover the fun of opera through interactive workshops reaching nearly 5,000 students from 55 schools across the region. Performers join students in the classroom to explore a masterful production, delving into opera basics and audience etiquette while unraveling the plot, meaning and music of the production.
